Aim : Preparing and Testing Straight and Cross UTP cable
Tools : Crimping Plier, UTP cables, RJ-45 Connecter, Cable Tester
1. Crimping Plier
Crimping plier is a tool to cut UTP cable and connector to clamp the end of the connector, and this is very important for us who want to learn how to crimp cable, this tool is almost the same shape with regular plier that we often see or meet.
2. UTP Cables
3. RJ- 45 Connector
4. Cable Tester
Cable Tester is a tool to test the results of our crimped cable, if we are wrong then Cable Tester lights will not turn on and if the results are correct then our crimped cable in Cable Tester lights will turn on automatically, so this tool is very useful for us to know our crimp results.
Straight UTP Cable :-
Making Straight UTP Cable :
- Step - 1 : Peel the end of the UTP cable, approximately 2 cm.
- Step - 2 : Open the cable strands, align and follow the arrangement as standard cable image shown below.
- Step - 3 : Put the cable is straight and aligned into the RJ - 45 connector, and make sure all cables are in correct position as follows :
Orange White on no 1
Orange on no 2
Green White on no 3
Blue on no 4
Blue White on no 5
Green on no 6
Brown White on no 7
Brown on no 8
- Step - 4 : Make crimping using crimp tools, press crimping tool and make sure all the pins ( brass ) on the RJ - 45 connector has " bite " of each cable. usually when done will sound "click ".
- Step - 5 : Once finished at the end of this one, do it again at the other end cable.
- Step - 6 : The final step is to check the cable that you created earlier using the LAN tester.
Straight UTP Cable Description :
Straight cable is a cable that has a same way of arrangement between one end with the other end.
Standard sequence of straight cable is below the standard that is in accordance with the TIA / EIA 368B ( most widely used ) or is sometimes also used according to standard TIA / EIA 368A as follows :
Straight UTP Cable Use :
- Connects the computer to the switch
- Connect the computer to the LAN on cable modem / DSL
- Connect the router to the modem LAN cable / DSL
- Connecting switch to router
- Connect the hub to the router
Cross UTP Cable :-
Making Cross UTP Cable :
- Step - 1 : Peel the end of the UTP cable, approximately 2 cm.
- Step - 2 : For the first end of the cable, position as follow:
Orange White on no 1
Orange on no 2
Green White on no 3
Blue on no 4
Blue White on no 5
Green on no 6
Brown White on no 7
Brown on no 8
- Step - 3 : For the second end of the cable, position as follow:
Green White on no 1
Green on no 2
Orange White on no 3
Blue on no 4
Blue White on no 5
Orange on no 6
Brown White on no 7
Brown on no 8
- Step - 4 : Make crimping using crimp tools, press crimping tool and make sure all the pins ( brass ) on the RJ - 45 connector has " bite " of each cable. usually when done will sound "click ".
- Step - 5 : The final step is to check the cable that you created earlier using the LAN tester.
Cross UTP Cable Description :
Cross cable is a cable that has a different arrangement between the end of one with the other, shown below :
Cross UTP Cable Use :
- Connecting 2 computers directly
- Connect the computer to the router
- Connecting the switch to hubs
- Connecting 2 pieces of hub
- Connecting 2 pieces of switch
Testing Straight and Cross UTP Cable :-
Enter each end of the cable ( RJ- 45 ) to each LAN port available on the tester, turn and make sure all of the LEDs light up according to the order of the wires we created.
If all lights are on then connection is perfect either there is problem in prepared cable.
